ARE KINESIOLOGISTS RECOGNIZED BY EIMC?

KINESIOLOGISTS NOW RECOGNIZED AS LEVEL 2 PROFESSIONALS BY EXERCISE IS MEDICINE CANADA

OTTAWA, February 16, 2021 – The Canadian Kinesiology Alliance is proud to announce that Kinesiologists are now recognized as Level 2 professionals by Exercise is Medicine Canada (EIMC). EIMC is a global health initiative that promotes physical activity as a chronic disease prevention and management strategy to improve the health of Canadians. The EIMC recognition program helps health care professionals identify highly qualified exercise professionals in their community. These professionals, now including Kinesiologists, are critical allies who help patients reach their physical activity goals to prevent and manage chronic disease.

The highest level, EIMC Level 2, groups professionals who have an undergraduate- or higher-level exercise science degree. Kinesiologists are recognized as having advanced knowledge and expertise in exercise management for those with chronic disease. They work with

  • seemingly healthy individuals with no constraints for regular participation in physical activity and exercise;
  • asymptomatic individuals with a single chronic disease or condition controlled with physician-prescribed therapies; and
  • patients at higher risk, including those who have more than one chronic disease or who may require clinical monitoring during exercise.

NOTE

The EIMC has not yet updated its website, so here are a few more details.

1. There is no longer a $50 or $60 membership. They are redesigning the membership structure to make it free.
2. The registration to the database is not yet complete because they are redoing it with the revision of the website.
3. They are no longer under the governance of the CSEP because they have become independent. This business model of having a country's EIM under the governance of an already existing organization is the model used in the United States. EIM in Canada started under this model and recently withdrew from it to reduce perceptions of conflict of interest.

Exercise is Medicine is a global initiative! Launched by the American College of Sports Medicine in 2007, this initiative can now be found in several countries.

EIMC EXERCISE PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION PROGRAM

Registering for Recognition as an EIMC Level 1 or 2 professional, and as a member of the EIMC Professional Network, is an important career step.

EIMC promotes our Recognized Professionals to healthcare professionals as critical allies helping patients reach their physical activity goals for the prevention and management of chronic disease.

EIMC provides national leadership promoting physical activity as a chronic disease prevention and management strategy to improve the health of Canadians. Through its credible, extensive and growing network of national, provincial and regional health care professional organizations, including family and sports medicine physicians, physiotherapists, chiropractors and dietitians, and now kinesiologists, EIMC will communicate the expertise of EIMC Recognized exercise professionals to health care professionals across Canada.

EIMC educational programming promotes the EIMC Recognition Program levels to help health care professionals identify exercise professionals with knowledge, skills and competencies to build motivation and effect behavioural change, with healthy inactive patients as well as work competently with patients at risk of, or with established chronic disease who are medically cleared for independent or supervised exercise prescription.

Our passionate multidisciplinary expert team is developing educational workshops, exercise prescription and referral and other decision-making tools that support health care professionals to assess, advise, prescribe and refer their patients to community or clinically based physical activity and exercise resources that support their health goals.

How do I enroll in the EIMC Recognition Program?

All current and new EIMC members need to register here.

Registered Kinesiologists in Ontario can join the EIMC Professional Network as 'Providers' alongside other regulated health professionals.
